Saturday 09 February 2008: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SOFIE B!!! To Lens of Not To Lens - that's the question on Sarah's mind today...

Sarah says:
To Lens?

Or not to lens?

Let me know what you think. I have an appointment next Saturday to try out lenses. I'm sick of being a glasses-wearer. I need a change as I'm starting to notice that I'm starting to age. I don't feel bad about the new lines showing up here and there and the older look of my face - but I do long for change so this is where I'm at in my head - do I go for lenses or not? It's a big commitment. I'm lazy and I'm slow in the morning. The idea of adding another thing to my morning and evening and routine doesn't seem very nice to me. But I sort of wnat my face back to myself. My glasses have borrowed my eyes and my nose and my ears for long enough. And I want nice sunglasses and different ones when I find nicer ones. I hate my clip-ons that break every few months. Next week I have to buy another pair of clip-ons for my glasses at Euro 58 a pop! That's a lot - like twice a year!

But I am so divided about this - hence my Saturday appointment next week. I go in at 11:30 and they test my eyes and put the lenses in for 4 hours. I go back and if it all wnt okay I can decide what to do. To Lens of Not To Lens. That is seriously the question. Feel free to help me out - and be honest! I have already heard from three people that my eyes are too small and that my head will look too big and that my wandering eye that point upwards without my glasses will make me look odd. I see what these people mean for sure but I'm still not sure. I have no problem with my face and I want it back! :-)

Heidi says: We painted green today! It was fun! And we celebrated Sofie Blancke's birthday! More fun! Happy birthday sweetheart!

Oh lens definately!! That is if they are comfortable for you. Different people have different shaped eyes. If you can feel them all the time then it would probably be annoying. But if you are like me once they're in I don't feel them at all and it is so much nicer. No smuges no rain drops - just like seeing. And seriously - I spend about 10 seconds in the morning and 10 seconds at night putting in/taking out. Once you get the hang of it, it doesn't take any time at all. It's not like the old days when you had to mess with a million solutions and clean them in the palm of your hands etc. (Maybe if you get hard ones it is still that way I don't know). But these days with soft contacts you just wear them for a month, store them in one solution which you also use to put them in. Easy peasy. I hope it goes well. Good luck!

A. It depends. With both glasses and lenses see whether you can find this in your posting: "I'm starting to I'm starting to age." Then go with the winner.

B. Now I know not everyone knows how to use the computer, but if you're going to be on one all day, you probably don't want lenses in. Lenses suck for close up work, even something as simple as clipping your nails. I only wear lenses for sports or at some social events. But if I lived somewhere as rainy as Belgium, I'd probably wear them a lot more, as I hate rain on my glasses.

Great advice and info! THANKS!!! I will consider all of it and see how the lenses feel next Saturday! I must say - I really like the idea of being able to have two faces. With both of you who left comments, you have your lens face and your glasses face and both are great and you can choose from day to day. Vanity! But the idea, which I hadn't even thought about, of not having raindrops blocking my vision - well that is JJJ and might win me over in the end. I think I'll just go for it if my eyes allow me - though the idea of not being able to wear the lenses because I'm on the computer all day - hmm - that complicates things...

Cheers, SRA

Until recently I never had any problem with wearing contacts while working on the computer. Then recently when I moved to NL after working for long periods on the computer I noticed that my eyes really dried out. But this was because I was buying the really cheap contact lenses over the counter as you can do here. I finally got my ass into a proper doctor and spoke to them about it. They told me it was down to two factors. 1. The cheap and nasty contacts I was wearing and 2. as you get older women's eyes dry out. So we test drove a couple different brands that are more 'breathable' and now I don't have any problems at all again. And the cost isn't bad either. It costs me less than 25 euros a month and that includes the optomists appointments and all the solutions.
